Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1980), India’s best known black comedy has emerged as the winner of India’s Greatest Film Ever in the poll conducted by L&C.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1980), India’s best known black comedy and the most popular spoof on the world of media and real estate, has emerged as the winner of India’s Greatest Film Ever in the public poll conducted by Learning & Creativity.

The surprise runner-up is Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957), the story of the firebrand jailor who risks his life to rehabilitate and reform 12 hardcore criminals.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, directed by Kundan Shah, polled 37% of the votes while Do Aankhen Barah Haath, which was directed and acted in by V Shantaram, polled 36% of the votes.

A distant 3rd with 23% votes is 3 Idiots, the modern day saga that delves into the psyche of young career enthusiasts who are caught in a dilemma of pursuing a career at their parents’ behest or chasing their own dreams.

The poll shows that even though blockbusters today maybe rewriting box-office records every few weeks, the black-and-white films of the Golden Era (1950s and 60s) and the thought-provoking New Wave cinema of the 1970s and 80s are just as popular as they were in their heydays and continue to entertain cine buffs.

The other films that garnered votes were Sholay (1975), Bandini (1963), Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995) and Pather Panchali (1955).
