Din about Chins — Vignettes about Mother-Daughter

April 1, 2025 | By

A heartwarming review of Santosh Bakaya’s witty mother-daughter vignettes, praised for relatable stories, rich wordplay, and laugh-out-loud moments that mothers will instantly recognize.

I have always been a sucker for heartwarming, slice-of-life stories that reflect human bonds. Dr. Santosh Bakaya’s Din about Chins – Vignettes about Mother-Daughter is one such book. It is a heartwarming compilation of vignettes about the mother-daughter relationship. Funny, witty, a tad sarcastic in places but wrapped in warmth, it is the perfect bouquet of anecdotes that symbolizes the mother-daughter bond tied together with the strings of love. I confess that what drew me in was the unique title. As I flipped through the first few pages, I understood why Dr Bakaya chose the title. Gosh, how I chuckled when I read the first anecdote Din about Chins. Ha! Ha! Funny!

At 118 pages in print length, this book is printed by Penprints, with a beautifully designed cover and a marvelous peek into Dr Santosh Bakaya’s life. Dr Bakaya has not been stingy in sharing personal details, and that makes this book so relatable. Replete with rich adjectives and metaphors that bank on rich vocabulary to take the tales forward, these stories are slices of everyday life from the author’s perspective. She comes across as a mother who is understanding, loving, and yet embodies a personality with tongue-in-cheek humor. That’s what makes her so easy to relate to. Aren’t all mothers like that? Parenting does not come with a manual. It comes chock-full of annoying, unsolicited, and mostly unwanted advice but carries no specific, workable instructions from the maker. So, the most that a mother can do is navigate the relationship, finding her own equation with her child. Hell, what works, works and what doesn’t, you just learn to cast that aside and move on. Correct?

Dr Bakaya’s book shines with her exemplary command of English wordplay. As you flip through the pages, the tales make you chuckle, chortle, grin, giggle, and laugh. At some points, the anecdotes make you guffaw outright. Examples:

Chapter, ‘Inside Story’, dialogue between mother and daughter about tattoos:

“Huh?”
“And you know, the tattoo artist was very cute.”
“Really?”
“He had a book full of designs.”
“Really?”
“He showed me the design of a veery beautiful tattoo on a boy’s butt.”
“WHAT!!!”
“But…” “But me no buts…I”

Chapter, ‘Oh the Horrel of It’, dialogue between mother and daughter about watching a horror movie:

“I want to watch a horrel movie.”
“It is not horrel, it is horror.”
“That’s what I am saying, HORREL!”

When I read the above extracts, I know I laughed out loud enough to startle my aging dog snoozing at my feet. He looked up with the most peculiar expression, as if questioning – “Have you lost your marbles, Mumma?” Ha! Ha! Perhaps, in that moment, I did… that’s how wonderfully humorous this book is.

No mother or daughter can resist cross-referencing this book to their life. I know I did it. There are so many stories that I felt were straight from my life and experiences. So, pick this book up to curl with it as you snuggle on a lounger sipping a mug of coffee or a glass of wine. Travel with this book. Take it places as you hold your daughter’s hand and revel in her childlike innocence. You will love it. That much I guarantee.
