Sweet trebles of sparrows and robins, and the raucous squawks of crows mingled with the screeches of lapwings. The robin was sunbathing on my windowsill, and enjoying every moment of it. The weather had changed a bit, the air was blowing softly, too languorous to become a full-fledged breeze, but the sun peeped now and then to make its warm presence felt.
Three sparrow fledglings peeped out of their nest, curious about the world whirring about them. Mama Sparrow let out a string of admonishing chirps, implying, “Don’t peep out, you might fall…” But the fledglings continued peeping out, triumphant at their audacity.
In the park, a woman was removing weeds, while a squirrel played with her feet, and the woman said something to her in soft, soothing tones. The sizzling and the whistling from the kitchens now merged with the breeze which was now blowing with full gusto.
A maid in one of the flats was hanging out clothes to dry. A couple of mynahs (two for joy) sat on the clothesline and preferred to have their morning ablutions there. The maid let out a yell of exasperation, suffixed with expletives so colorful, that even the blue sky changed colors, turning crimson with embarrassment!
The fiery sun had re-emerged after days of relentless rains. The pleasant weather was so heartwarming that I could have turned cartwheels, but to my horror, I saw it was the maid turning cartwheels, not in joy, but in untethered anger.
“How dare you dirty my clothes? I will have to rewash them. There is water shortage. And there was also a warning to conserve water. Because water supply will be interrupted… Don’t you have any control over your stomach? What did you eat last night? Gluttons! Gluttony is not good for your tiny bodies…” and she continued. Under this vocal assault, the two mynahs flew away, leaving in their wake a fretting and fuming woman, full of fire and brimstone.
Alas, the two mynahs that were known to provide joy to everyone had not provided it to her. When last seen, she was mouthing expletives through clenched lips and thumping a fist at the escaping criminals!
But no thumping fists bothered me. The weather was too beautifully colorful to let me be intimidated by the color of wrath in the maid’s eyes, and the jarringly gross color of the expletives. The greens and yellows were in perfect harmony, and the other colors heightened the harmony, wiping out the notes of disharmony.
The birds continued with their avian orchestra, unfazed by the note of cacophony unleashed by a woman gone berserk and flailing her arms in all directions. It was indeed paradoxical that while her indignation had been triggered by the sight of birds answering the call of nature, it was sublime nature that had come to my rescue with the natural sights and sounds.

This delightful piece captures the charm of a tranquil morning where the interplay of nature, human activity, and emotions creates a vivid tableau. It juxtaposes the serene beauty of birds, sunlight, and soft breezes with the chaotic humor of a maid’s indignation over two mischievous mynahs. You have highlighted the contrasting moods—harmony in nature versus human frustration—concluding with the resilience of the natural world and its ability to overshadow human discord. Ultimately, it is a celebration of nature’s calming essence amidst life’s everyday quirks and cacophony. Superb…..
