Rescue

It was a beautiful morning in Jammu and although the temperature was 39 degree, the fragrant breeze wafting across to me as I stepped out of the house, was  rejuvenating enough to put a new vigour  in my limp body. The birds also seemed to have caught the infection, and were lustily waking up the sleeping world along with   a conscientious rooster, sitting on the neighbour’s wall.

I watched enchanted, as a seven-year-old, in the neighbour’s house, on his way to the washroom,  took off his trousers and , so carried away as he was by the pleasant breeze, started  swinging them  in the air. Like a naughty elf, the trousers  caught hold of the clothesline  overhead, and much to the embarrassment of the boy, started swinging from the clothesline.

Dancing away in the boisterous breeze, spreading their wings like an out of practice dancer who has suddenly rediscovered the power of dance., the trousers seemed to have been infused with a  life of their own and danced away with incredible aplomb.

“Aisey hi aadha nanga ghoomega kya?”A motherly reprimand hit the boy.  Embarrassed at the words referring to his half naked state, the boy pulled and tugged at the trousers harder, but they continued to swing away, unfazed by the little one’s discomfiture.

Doubled with shame at his naked predicament, the boy started bawling, and the mother’s reprimands grew louder.

Just then a miracle happened.

Clouds big and small, bloated, breezy and boisterous converged on the scene – there was darkness at noon.

The boy was no longer naked, the clouds had come to his rescue. The darkness had brightened the little one.

I almost clapped in glee,  thanking the spirit of the clouds, once more convinced that even the darkness harbours some good.
