Bawarchi, 1972, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee is the Hindi remake of the Bengali hit film Golpo Holeo Shotti by Tapan Sinha.
“In his many roles and films worth mentioning, his role in Bawarchi still stands out as an unparalleled and bold attempt at comedy by an actor who had reached his stature. He plays the peace loving cook who acts as a catalyst for a good change in a middle class joint family’s lifestyle and behaviour. A refreshing change to any of his other roles, Bawarchi brought such a colourful layer to Khanna’s versatility that it added a new dimension to his on screen and offscreen persona. Of course, Bawarchi was also marked by his signature glances, head bobbing gestures and phrases that had come to stay but his character displayed a unique craftiness with words and a marvellous comic demeanour that people had only witnessed in very few of his films.”
