Bawarchi, 1972, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee is the Hindi remake of the Bengali hit film Golpo Holeo Shotti by Tapan Sinha.

He plays the peace loving cook who acts as a catalyst for a good change in a middle class joint family’s lifestyle and behaviour. Of course, Bawarchi was also marked by his signature glances, head bobbing gestures and phrases that had come to stay but his character displayed a unique craftiness with words and a marvellous comic demeanour that people had only witnessed in very few of his films.”
