Insignificant: Poetic Reflections on the Vast Cosmos and Self

November 9, 2025 | By

“Insignificant” reflects on the enormity of the universe and our tiny place within it. Through stars, galaxies, and the night sky, the poem explores awe, humility, and fleeting self-awareness. It is inspired by a photo I came across on the web long ago, an image that stirred a quiet sense of wonder and perspective.

Insignificant

I dwell on the expanse of the cosmos
Eternal and unending
And my worries scatter like dust
in the vastness of thought.
I look up at the night sky.
The moon shines in its silvery shimmer
The stars twinkling afar
The light reaching me eons later
still light up my eyes.

The cosmos tells a story of a time,
Older than anything I will know.
The Sun, the giant fireball
another star that is just close by.
Our beloved Earth – the Blue Planet
turning quietly and going about its way.
Milky Way, our galaxy
Just another among countless others.

Here I stand, under the night sky.
Another soul among billions,
My heart pacing with questions,
My mind filled with anxieties
That dissolve when I understand
the enormity of what surrounds me.
What is a worry
measured against the age of a star?
What is my sorrow,
set beside the mysteries of the galaxies?

Yet even this insignificance holds weight.
Is it the ego?
Or an innate desire to be something more?
And I console myself with this thought,
an awareness that is often fleeting
and mostly forgotten.

That the universe is vast,
and still,
I exist within it.
It is both unsettling and humbling.

Thank you so much for your appreciation and kind words. Hume jab ehsaas hota hai ki is brahmand mein hum bindu matra bhi nahi hai, toh sab pareshaniya gaun ho jaati hai.
