Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan held their granddaughter Aaradhya’s educational initiation on the occasion of Basant Panchami on 4th February.

On Basant Panchami, Saraswati, the goddess of arts, knowledge, and music is worshipped. Saraswati  Puja is celebrated mostly in Bengal.

The “Hathe Khari” Ceremony (the chalk in hand ceremony) is an important ritual held during the puja ceremony of Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning, in which children who have just turned 2 are initiated into learning formally.

Children are given some traditional writing tools such as slate and chalk and they scribble their first letters in front of Maa Saraswati’s idol, sitting on the lap or their parents or grandparents or any relative who is considered “learned”.

As Amitabh  Bachchan wrote on his blog srbachchan, “This morning early on the 4th was an auspicious day – Saraswati Pooja – a day of learning and education and a prayer to Saraswati the Goddess of learning .. a small prayer with the staff, and then the most important ritual .. the moment of giving Aaradhya a writing utensil and leave it to her to scribble .. its a moment of initiation, of the child towards education and learning, after completing 2 years of age!”

“Its tradition, it is culture, it is cute. Aaradhya picked up a piece of chalk and scribbled on a slate. The initiation was complete!” – wrote the legend himself.
