Debi Chowdhurani (1974) was directed by Dinen Gupta. Suchitra Sen played the title role, with Ranjit Mullick as Brajeswar, Kali Banerjee as Haraballabh, Basanta Chowdhury as Bhabani Pathak.
Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterji and published in 1884, this Bengali novel fuelled the patriotic struggle for Indian independence from the British Empire. Since it followed Anandamath (Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s pathbreaking revolutionary novel) the British government banned the novel Debi Chowdhurani.
