Charming Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre meaning "The Five Lands" comprises of five beautiful villages namely – Manarola, Riomaggiore, Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare and Corniglia. Cinque Terre lies in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. Each village is unique in its beauty.

Such is the immense beauty of Cinque Terre that all the five villages, coastline and the surrounding hillsides are the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Leave the well-trodden path for once and head to Cinque Terre. The colorful houses and terraces over steep cliffs that lend a magical charm to the place.

The closest airports to Cinque Terre are Cristoforo Colombo international airport in Genoa and "Galileo Galilei" international airport in Pisa.

By Train
All the five Cinque Terre villages are well connected by rail. All the villages have a train station. Local trains run from Genova and La Spezia to Cinque Terre. Purchase an all day train pass in La Spezia that lets you to hike the Cinque Terre trails.

By Car
The drive from La Spezia to Manarola or Riomaggiore takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Parking spot is available in Riomaggiore, Monterosso de Mare and Manarola. However best is to leave your vehicle in La Spezia and take the train to Cinque Terre.

Getting around
Cars are not allowed around the area and you can visit different villages through boats. Local trains also connect all five villages to one another.

Manarola: Explore the beautiful coastline of Manarola and the caves and the underwater rocks. Places to look for in Manarola are: Church of St Lawrence and Oratory, Groppo and Via dell'Amore (Way of Love) – It is a tourist path that connects Riomaggiore to Manarola.

Vernazza: Unlike other towns, Vernazza is lively and boasts of a great night scene. Enjoy magnificent views, have wine, check out two clock towers and have delicious local food. Places to look for in Vernazza are: Church of St. Margaret of Antioch, Palazzo with porticoes, Belforte Tower and Castle A. Doria.

Riomaggiore: Riomaggiore is the southern-most of the five villages. The main street of Riomaggiore, Via Colombo, is lined with restaurants, cafes, and bars. Attractions to check out in Riomaggiore are: Church of St John the Baptist, Oratory and chapels, Castle of Riomaggiore, begin of Via dell'Amore.

Corniglia: About 300 feet above the Ligurian Sea, lies the town of Corniglia. Quaint and beautiful, Corniglia sits atop a large hill. Attractions to check out in Corniglia are: Church of St. Peter, Oratory of the Flagellants of St Catherine, and a nudist beach known as "Guvano".

Monterosso: In Monterosso, dine at beach-side restaurants, visit cafes and check out boutiques. What you can find here: Church of S. Giovanni Battista, Castle, walls and towers, The Giant or Neptune.

When in Cinque Terre, try out authentic local delicacies. Relish Trofie pasta, Tagliatelle pasta and meals made with local herbs. Not to forget, enjoy the local wine.
