As a female Afghani rapper in conservative Iran, Sonita’s talents are a liability. But Sonita insists on dreaming big. Her beats solid as stones, her rhymes fierce, and her videos a piercing howl against the constant injustice, fear, and sexism women must endure. It was only a matter of time before her charismatic presence and spirited eyes changed her fortune, and with the help of acclaimed director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami, she is suddenly offered a scholarship that leads her on a dangerous trip back to Afghanistan. All the while, Sonita’s conservative mother insists she must be married off soon, at a price, and threatens to derail Sonita’s life at its most critical juncture
“Sonita has a fascinating closeness to its title subject, as Maghami captures very personal interactions without an obtrusive presence. The doc gets involved with presenting her rapping skills, including a riveting music video where she raps directly to the camera about her fears of being a child bride. It’s a show-stopping centerpiece, and narratively changes the fate of Sonita to something completely unexpected… Sonita puts a defiant face and expressive voice to a resistance that needs to be as loud as possible.”
