So what\u2019s new?<\/p>\n<p>But this is not just a song. It\u2019s a conversation, a relay, a give-and-take. Its poetry, recited simply so, and then weaved into a tune. Dev Anand, the musician-singer is being put to test by his lady love Nutan with a \u201clet-me-see-if-you-can-make-a-song-of-this\u201d kind of challenge.<\/p>\n<p>On the face of it, it\u2019s a duet. But it has parts where each singer sings his\/her own tune separately and yet together, two parallel tracks that never submerge the other, never overshadow. Simply put, it\u2019s a game in music in perfect harmony and sublime love.<\/p>\n<p><em>chupke se mile pyaase pyaase<\/em><br \/>\n<em>kuch hum kuch tum<\/em><br \/>\n<em>kya ho jo ghata khul ke barse<\/em><br \/>\n<em>rumm jhumm rumm jhumm<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_fe-N6g1kLM\" width=\"100%\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>SD Burman\u2019s mastery over music and instrumentation, his complete understanding of his singers and their talents and his uncanny knack of fitting a tune to the situation spot, on is all so visible in this beautiful duet from\u00a0<em>Manzil<\/em> (1960). Who else but Geeta can be as emotive, making the words sound as soft as feather, as lyrical as the rain and as delicate as the finest glass.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Geeta Dutt begins with just the\u00a0whimsical and thoughtful recitation of the opening lines. It isn\u2019t a song yet but the\u00a0rendition\u00a0of the\u00a0<em>mukhda<\/em>\u00a0itself is musical with Nutan complimenting Geeta with perfect expressions.<\/p>\n<p>The suave and smart Dev Anand ponders for a moment and then picks up the cue with Rafi as the matching voice, playfully stringing the lines in tune.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\">The music arrangement is a story in itself.\u00a0\u00a0SDB uses the\u00a0Piano Accordion, the Bongos, the Semi-Electric Rhythm Guitar and the Mouth Organ!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\">After the brief unusual adlib, the music starts off with a dramatic Accordion Slide and a Single Guitar Strum (at 0:20) and then the Bongos and the Chiplis take centerstage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>chupke se mile pyaase pyaase<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Kuchh hummmmmmm\u2026 kuch tumm<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Kuchh hummmmmmm\u2026 kuch tumm<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rafi uses the Hindi word \u2018hum\u2019 to actually hummm delightfully, stopping teasingly\u00a0at a questioning \u2018<em>kuchh<\/em>\u2026?\u2019<\/p>\n<p><em>kya ho jo ghata khul ke barse<\/em><br \/>\n<em>rumm jhumm rumm jhumm<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3217\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3217\" class=\"wp-image-3217\" src=\"http:\/\/learningandcreativity.com\/silhouette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/Nutan-in-Manzil.jpg\" alt=\"Nutan in Manzil\" width=\"400\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/learningandcreativity.com\/silhouette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/Nutan-in-Manzil.jpg 537w, https:\/\/learningandcreativity.com\/silhouette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/Nutan-in-Manzil-400x242.jpg 400w, https:\/\/learningandcreativity.com\/silhouette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/Nutan-in-Manzil-150x91.jpg 150w, https:\/\/learningandcreativity.com\/silhouette\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2016\/10\/Nutan-in-Manzil-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nutan aptly emotes the delicate Doo-Wop by Geeta Dutt.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\">The\u00a0Accordion then adds an escalating Fill &#8211; a\u00a0unique 14-seconds interlude on the Mouth Organ (played by Dev Anand on screen) with the Bongos and Chiplis subdued from 1.00. This\u00a0is the classic SDB stamp. Notice her tremble at the words\u00a0<em>Shor hai<\/em>\u00a0(2.27-28) and\u00a0<em>Sangeet hai<\/em>\u00a0(2.31-32);\u00a0<em>saaz hai<\/em>\u00a0(2.35-36) and\u00a0<em>gee-eet hai<\/em>(2:39-40) add lucre to the rhythm. If this is not marvellous <em>harkat<\/em>, what is?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t help get carried away with this musical t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\">And then SDB&#8217;s East Bengal charm hits you square where he flips the lyrics of both the singers.\u00a0 As Geeta sings the couplet,\u00a0<em>Thandi hawa ka shor hai, Ya pyar ka sangeet hai,\u00a0<\/em>Rafi\u2019s accompanies her with an<em> aalap<\/em>\u00a0(between 2.41 to 2.49).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\">The roles reverse in the next couplet and its Rafi\u2019s turn to sing\u00a0<em>Chitwan teri ik saaz hai, dhadkan teri ik geet hai<\/em>\u00a0with Geeta\u2019s aalap on parallel track till 2.57.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One is amazed at the sheer brilliance of rhythm of the music director and arranger and pure expertise of the singers. A serene, sublime and peaceful finishing to a musical rendezvous.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The charming interplay culminates in the delicate\u00a0<em>maddhammm\u2026 maddhammm<\/em>\u2026with Geeta finishing it off with her characteristic <em>hmmm&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\">Now SDB gets both his prized singers to sing in unison from 3:07.\u00a0Move to 3.09 and notice where Geeta breaks off at\u00a0<em>Kuchh<\/em>&#8230; (3.15) and the Accordion pumps its presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\">The Bard masters the song from\u00a03.28 where he makes the two singers playfully interact and then unmistakably you have SDB&#8217;s Phantom Mark &#8211; a 1.20 minutes of an expanded Cadence on a subdued\u00a0Mouth Organ. A serene, sublime and peaceful finishing to a musical rendezvous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One does not need to make an effort to guess that both Geeta and Rafi were thoroughly enjoying singing these lines together. Hemant Kumar sang the soulful\u00a0<em>Yaad aa gai woh nasheeli nigaahen\u00a0<\/em>(in two versions \u2013 romantic and sad), which was a huge hit.<em>\u00a0<\/em>Manna Dey had four songs (three solos and one duet) and Rafi had two (both duets).\u00a0One of Manna Dey\u2019s songs <em>Hato kehke jhoothi banaao batiyan<\/em>\u00a0was picturised on Mehmood.<\/p>\n<p>But in terms of sheer originality of composition, rendition and music arrangement this song easily tops in the album. Majrooh Sultanpuri\u2019s lyrics accentuate the romance furthermore, chiseled to sit perfectly in this highly innovative musical game.<\/p>\n<p>It was a time when love was tender and poetry. It was a time when music was soft and true. It was a time when the music makers poured their soul into their creations, singers sang from their heart and the actors went the extra mile to do justice to the songs on screen.
