Such was his impact that music directors created songs keeping him in mind, with the trust that only he could deliver those intricate murkis with ease.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\"><em><strong>Zindagi kaisi hai paheli haaye<\/strong><\/em> (<em>Anand<\/em>, 1971) Salil Chowdhury \/ Yogesh<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3vgDb4TQneA?rel=0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Born Prabodh Chandra Dey in Kolkata 1919 and known by his nickname Manna, this versatile singer became synonymous with classical songs and humorous songs in Hindi and Bengali film music and also \u201cadhunik\u201d Bengali songs. He brought the elite \u201cclassical\u201d music into the popular domain, making these songs hummable by anyone who loved to croon.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\"><em><strong>Laaga chunri mein daag chhupaun kaise<\/strong><\/em> (<em>Dil Hi To Hai<\/em>, 1963) Roshan \/ Sahir Ludhianvi<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uD5Pe4k3myI\" width=\"100%\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Those first songs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recipient of Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2009, the Padma Bhushan in 2005,\u00a0the Padma Shri in 1971 and the National Award twice, Dey began his career in playback singing with a duet with Suraiya &#8220;<em>Jaago jaago aayee usha&#8221;<\/em> in the film\u00a0<i>Tamanna<\/i>\u00a0in 1942, under the music direction of well known composer K C Dey,\u00a0his uncle, tutor and mentor.<\/p>\n<p>But it was only in 1943 that he got his first solo break with <em>Ram Rajya<\/em>.\u00a0Incidentally, the producer of the film Vijay Bhatt and its composer Shankar Rao Vyas had approached K C Dey with an offer for playback in the film. When K C Dey refused the offer on the grounds that he would not lend his voice to other actors, they spotted Manna Dey sitting in the corner of the room and offered him the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Shankar Rao Vyas taught Manna Dey the songs and he chose to sing them in his uncle\u2019s distinct style. And thus started the illustrious career with the first song \u201c<em>Gayi tu gayi Seeta sati<\/em>\u201c(<em>Ram Rajya<\/em>, 1943).Though he sang quite a few songs after this, his first hit song was Kavi Pradeep&#8217;s <em>&#8220;Oopar gagan vishal<\/em>&#8221; for the film <em>Mashal<\/em> (1950).<\/p>\n<p>He lived in a large, joint family &#8220;in an atmosphere drenched in music.&#8221; His immense control over his voice was due to his intense tutelage under stalwarts of classical music\u00a0who visited his home and his uncle K C Dey, who was a\u00a0well-known Bengali\u00a0actor, singer, music composer and teacher.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\"><em><strong>Poocho na kaise maine rain bitai<\/strong><\/em> (<em>Meri Surat Teri Aankhen<\/em> , 1963) SD Burman \/ Shailendra<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0vh8_1ruoRo\" width=\"100%\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Powerful Classical Base<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>K C Dey mentored him and introduced him into a career which would eventually become legendary. &#8220;I was drawn towards my uncle&#8217;s ability to modify classical music to make it appealing to the layperson,&#8221; Manna Dey recalled in an insightful interview in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flipkart.com\/bollywood-melodies-history-hindi-film-song\/p\/itmczyrpmywxqnhu?pid=9780143063407&amp;affid=partholear\"> Bollywood Melodies: A History of the Hindi Film Song<\/a><\/em>, the authoritative book by Ganesh Anantharaman.<\/p>\n<p>The classical training set Manna Dey in a genre of his own but that did not any way affect his extensive repertoire of love songs, humorous songs and songs that could move you to tears.<\/p>\n<p>Think of a romantic, moonlit night and <em>\u201cYeh raat bheegi bheegi, yeh mast fizaayein, utha dheere dheere woh chand pyaara pyaara<\/em>\u2026\u201d (the Manna Dey-Lata Mangeshkar duet from <em>Chori Chori<\/em>) sets the mood. Shankar Jaikishan picked him for Raj Kapoor at a time when Mukesh was known as the actor&#8217;s voice. Restlessly searching for excellence and often getting it. Bengali popular music has basically two genres \u2013 film music and modern \u201cadhunik\u201d songs and Manna Dey came up with superhit numbers in both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Coffee houser shei adda ta aaj aar neyi<\/em>\u201d reminiscenced the lost era of Kolkata\u2019s famous coffee house gatherings or \u201c<em>adda<\/em>\u201d while the classical gems \u201c<em>Ami je jalsaghare<\/em>\u201d and\u00a0\u201c<em>Aami jamini tumi shashi hey\u201d <\/em>(<em>Antony Firingi<\/em>) brought back the era of the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century music. \u201c<em>Ami shri shri bhajohori manna<\/em>\u201d is a fun song about cooking, &#8220;<em>Bado aika laage<\/em>&#8221; (<em>Chowringhee<\/em>) creates the mood of loneliness while \u201c<em>Jodi Himalay Alps er shomosto jaumat baraf<\/em>\u201d spells everlasting love. Manna Dey became the playback voice of Bengal&#8217;s King of Hearts Uttam Kumar when the star&#8217;s legendary partnership with Hemant Kumar faded out.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c2150a;\"><em><strong>Coffee Houser sei addata aaj aar neyi<\/strong><\/em> (an iconic non-film song) Suparnakanti Ghosh \/ Gauriprashanna Majumder<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eygaFCOGxCY\" width=\"100%\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These are just a few gems from a treasure of finest music that Manna Dey has left behind.
