Gadar 2 is an exciting watch with a great storyline, old nostalgic music, stellar performances, and balanced direction. A Silhouette review.
Gadar 2 is a sequel of the 2001 hit Gadar Ek Prem Katha that had made history at the box office. Continuing with the story that scorched the screens 22 years ago, Gadar 2 tells an epic tale of love, courage, and patriotism, this time against the backdrop of the “Crush India” campaign in 1971. The film starts with a flashback of Gadar Part 1, which had the backdrop of the Partition of 1947.
The story revolves around Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), who returns to Pakistan to bring back his son Charanjeet Singh ‘Jeete’ (Utkarsh Sharma). Anil Sharma’s direction keeps the patriotic flame burning with its action-packed narrative and compelling drama.
Sunny Deol, as Tara Singh, delivers an outstanding performance. The raw action scenes and the chemistry between Sunny and Ameesha are commendable. Sunny portrays the power-packed father’s role in the movie, a father who can face anything for his family – a hero and protector of his family. You get the goosebumps when Charanjeet roars, “Agar mera pape yaha aagya na toh tere itne chithre karega poora Pakistan nahin tik paayega.”
Utkarsh Sharma does full justice to the role of Jeete aka Charanjeet Singh. His performance, especially his dialogue delivery and screen presence must be appreciated. He plays the role of the son who can do anything to find his father, even crossing borders and risking his life.
Ameesha Patel plays the role of Sakina, the wife of Tara Singh and the mother of Jeete. Her screen presence in the movie is limited, but she leaves an impact with her histrionics, especially the expression of her love for the two men in her life. Ameesha makes a great comeback with this movie.
Such an action flick without a strong villain runs the risk of falling flat. Gadar 2 makes sure the hero is pitted again an intensely dark character — Major General of the Pakistan Army, Hamid Iqbal. His evil portrayal is well brought out. I’m sure after seeing his devilish role, you will start hating Manish Wadhwa in real life… his performance as the Major is so realistic.
If you have watched Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, the songs would be fresh in memory. The magic of these nostalgic songs is recreated in Gadar 2 as well. The popular duo of Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik is back with Udja kale kawan. Also, you will groove to the unforgettable Main nikla gaddi leke by Udit Narayan. The song Khariyat, an ode to the family, is designed to kindle emotions.
The first half of the film is slightly slow to pick up, some scenes drag on more than required and become a bit boring to watch. Once the second half begins, the film picks up a good pace with the father setting off on a mission to rescue his son. The suspense is nail-biting. In the end, when Tara Singh, comes in, his raw mode is whistle-blowing.
In a world where sequels come and go, Gadar 2 stands out as a fitting continuation of a film that had a great impact on the viewers two decades ago. The box office collection says it all. At the time of writing this story, while the film is still in its first week in theatres, it has already become the second-highest domestic grosser of the year, after Pathaan. The Shah Rukh Khan film made Rs 543.05 crore in India, as per Bollywood Hungama. Gadar 2 has already crossed The Kerala Story’s lifetime collection of Rs 242.20 crore.
This sequel was highly awaited and the most anticipated movie of 2023 since its teaser announcement. We live in a world where big sequels like KGF Universe and Pathaan Spyverse create hype when they announce the sequels to their movies. The same has happened with the Gadar franchise as well.
However, many movies make a comeback with their sequels but fail to impress their fans due to weak storylines or a lack of connection between the previous parts. Director Anil Sharma knew his audience and connected the movie with the old story. This movie may not match the impact of the original movie, but it’s still commendable. The original Gadar left an impact that has broken barriers of time. Sunny Deol, who enjoys a huge fanbase, is also receiving lots of love for his performance in the second part. In short, one can say, Gadar 2 is a bit slow-paced in comparison to the first part.
Overall, Gadar 2 is an exciting watch with a great storyline, old nostalgic music, stellar performances, and balanced direction. It is a thrilling and emotional ride, appealing to fans of the original and as well as new audience today.
